New York Minute | Film No. 44

As luck would have it, the next two films are Olsen twin movies, and their last picture is the first on the chopping block.  First off, this film is the best of their careers and it is iconic.  *fight. me.* Second, Simple Plan and an Osbourne are in it. Enough. Said.

As with most Olsen films, the plot is absolutely ridiculous and not at all based in reality. In New York Minute, two sisters who have grown apart since their mother’s death try to attend separate events in NYC and end up spending the day together. It is sweet but also this film was goals for me as a teenager.  I was obsessed with rock music (including Simple Plan) and was learning to play bass when this hit theaters.  Mary Kate’s character Roxy influenced my style for years *looks longingly at her perfect messy curls* but I have moved on….. (lies)

Despite liking NYM, I have two HUGE issues with this film. 1. I just got back from NYC and literally none of the scenes make sense.  One minute they are at Bryant Park, the next, they are in the MIDDLE OF TIME SQUARE.  It seemed like the shots were only based around being in recognizable locations, not any sort of continuity.  2. The hair dressing scene.  It feels like a horrific cartoon of what *white* people think Harlem is like.  Also, the multiple outfit changes that they are given feel somewhat like a joke *insert the knicks outfit* and none of the other clothes feel like that. Also, all of the “nice black people fixing the distressed white girls up for free” felt a bit off to me.

Aside from that paragraph rant, there is still something left to like about this film. (Please see the cute gif of Pierre from Simple Plan above) It is my favorite Olsen movie and I still am obsessed with MKs outfits in this film.

This post is part of my year end challenge to watch every movie that I own.  If you want to see the original post with a full list of all of the films.  Click here.
