Rushmore | Film No. 49

*PREPARE FOR A SERIOUS REVIEW* For the next installment of Wes Anderson week I am following up Moonrise Kingdom with Rushmore. Rushmore is Anderson’s second full length feature and stars a baby Jason Schwartzman alongside Bill Murray. Anderson’s signature filming style shines through in Rushmore, and only becomes more developed in his subsequent.

Rushmore is the school of one Max Fischer, an extraordinary professional student. He finds that he cannot excel in his studies because he has been busy creating every club in school. He only cares about the school; Rushmore…. And one of his teachers. Max then fights Herman Blume (Bill Murray) for the affections of the lovely Ms. Cross.

Recently, many films have been “spoiled” by the current spotlight, which is cast on inappropriate relationships between teens and adults. *please see any Woody Allen or Roman Polanski film* Not going to lie, Rushmore is walking that “if the gender roles were reversed would it be ok?” line. The 16-17 year old student GOING AFTER one of the teachers to the extent of cutting the brakes of his rival is a bit much and kinda creepy. Also, the teacher speaking in graphic sexual language to a child is a LOT. The second time watching this through made those creepy interactions way worse.

Rushmore is not one of my favorite films by Wes Anderson, but it is part of the collection… SO… I think I might rewatch this in six months and rethink if I should keep it or not at that point. I love the music and filming style, but the over the line sexual pursuit of an adult by a teen is a bit cringe. Might let this one go.

This post is part of my year end challenge to watch every movie that I own.  If you want to see the original post with a full list of all of the films.  Click here.
